Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a symptom of an underlying neurological dysfunction occurring within the brain. The normal brain exists in a constantly changing balance of bioelectrical impulses. Seizures, also known as fits or convulsions, manifest themselves when this balance is upset and an uncoordinated firing of the neurons within the cerebellum occurs. Idiopathic or Primary Epilepsy has no known cause and is possibly/probably inherited. Seizures caused by underlying or external factors such as toxic substances, trauma, liver or heart failure, metabolic or electrolyte abnormalities/imbalances are known as Secondary Epilepsy.
Epilepsy is thought to be carried by a few lines in Italian Spinoni. In breeding our puppies, we have been as careful as possible to avoid any lines which are thought to carry epilepsy.
